Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions?

Do you offer transportation services?
No, we don’t.  All students are transported to and from school by parents, grandparents, guardians, or carpools.

Is Savannah Christian Academy accredited?
Yes, we are accredited by ACSI (Association of Christian Schools International) and also by SACS (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools).

How many students are allowed in each grade level?
In kindergarten, the overall class size may reach 20, but after the eighteenth student signs up, a half-day classroom aide is provided.  At other grade levels, the following allotment is followed:

First Grade:                            24 with a part-time aide provided with 20+

Second Grade:                        24 with a part-time aide provided with 20+

Third-Eighth Grade:               24 students

What are the hours of the school day?
Classes begin promptly at 8:00 a.m. and conclude at 3:00 p.m. Students are to be dropped off by 7:50 each morning so that they may be in their class and ready to begin the day by 8:00 a.m.

Are there any extracurricular activities at SCA?
Yes; students may join the Eagles’ Running Club and participate in may local 5K runs, join the middle school’s girls’ or boys’ basketball team, participate in intramural or middle school soccer  or they may receive music lessons given through Savannah Music Academy, or they may take part in the Art, Creative Writing, Music, or Spelling Bee events offered through ACSI.

Does the school teach from a denominational view?
SCA is a ministry of Sharon Baptist Church and, as such, adheres to the same precepts and principles as the church.  It does not, however, seek to make baptists of all students, but rather seeks to make believers of them.  The Bible is upheld as the infallible, inerrant word of God and is taught from this perspective.  The teachers themselves reflect varying denominations, with some being Methodist, some Baptists, and some non-denominational.  Students attending SCA reflect an even greater denominational variety, with the denominations of Church of Christ, Presbyterian, and Catholic being added to the ones previously mentioned.

What sports does SCA offer?

SCA offers individual and team athletic activities.  All students may enter the 5K runs that the school participates in and students in grades 2-8 may join the after school running club which meets in the fall and in the spring.

Elementary students in grades 2-4 may participate in the intramural soccer games held in March and middle school girls and boys may participate in spring soccer.

SCA also offers basketball to students in grades 5-8.

Plans are in the works to begin golf and tennis for students in middle school.

Does SCA offer any foreign language courses?
For this school year, 2010-2011, Spanish lessons will be integrated into the curriculum but will not be taught by a Spanish teacher.  While this is an area that we strongly believe in, our primary focus is on the core components of the curriculum (reading, writing, and math) with Spanish being promoted as often as possible with the resources that are available.

Are there plans for a future high school?

While we do desire to have a high school in the future, at this time we are simply waiting upon God to show us when the time will be right.  It is our desire to offer an educational program for children that encampasses all grade levels, from kindergarten through twelfth grade.

What type of standardized testing does SCA use?
The Stanford 10 Achievement test and the Otis Lennon Ability test are administered each April.  Student performance has been consistently high each year, with many grade levels scoring above the 90th percentile nationally.  While each grade level (K-8) takes the achievement test, only students in grades two, four, six, and eight take the Otis Lennon test.

Is there a dress code at SCA?
Yes, there is.  While uniforms are not required, a standard of dress shirt and pant are required.  For further information, please refer to the section on dress code provided in the school handbook.

What are the school’s views on Halloween, Christmas, and Easter?
In all holidays, it is the custom of Savannah Christian Academy to emphasize the sacred over the secular.  As such, there will be no use of Santa Clause or the Easter Bunny in conjunction with Christmas and Easter, and a Harvest Festival replaces any Halloween activities.
