Sheltering Tree: The Purpose, the Policy, the PracticeThe Purpose:The purpose of
The Sheltering Tree program is to provide one-on-one tutoring for students who exhibit characteristics of autism and/or Asperger’s syndrome. The goal of Sheltering Tree is to provide early intervention so that students may achieve maximum potential within the regular classroom. The practice of Sheltering Tree is to work with students on a one to one ratio and then to provide “tutorial shadowing, a practice which involves the tutor staying with the child while in the regular classroom. As the student progresses, more time will be spent in the regular classroom, less shadowing will occur, and the amount of one-on-one time will decrease. The goal of the program is to enable the student to function independently within a regular classroom.
