SCA’s Sheltering Tree

They shall be like trees, firmly planted by streams of water, which yield their fruit in due season and in whatever they do, they prosper. -Psalm 1:3

Sheltering Tree: The Purpose, the Policy, the PracticeThe Purpose:The purpose of

Savannah Christian Academy’s Sheltering Tree program is to provide early intervention to classroom students who have characteristics of autism and/or Asperger’s syndrome. The Policy:The Sheltering Tree program will operate under the policies set forth by SCA as recorded in the parent/student handbook (i.e. admissions, dress code, attendance, etc.), with the only modification occurring only in the area of discipline. In addition to these policies, it will be the policy of SCA’s Sheltering Tree to only work with students who would be classified as either mild or moderate on the autism or Asperger scale. The Practice:

The Sheltering Tree program is to provide one-on-one tutoring for students who exhibit characteristics of autism and/or Asperger’s syndrome. The goal of Sheltering Tree is to provide early intervention so that students may achieve maximum potential within the regular classroom. The practice of Sheltering Tree is to work with students on a one to one ratio and then to provide “tutorial shadowing, a practice which involves the tutor staying with the child while in the regular classroom. As the student progresses, more time will be spent in the regular classroom, less shadowing will occur, and the amount of one-on-one time will decrease. The goal of the program is to enable the student to function independently within a regular classroom.
